TEDEd Club

 at Wolf  Swamp Road School

Longmeadow, Massachusetts

Technology, Entertainment, and Design

Welcome to our TEDEd Club

Where Students Make A Difference!

Our Motto

We will take risks to transform into the speaker we all want to be.  To do that, we have to trust one another, not laugh at the wrong things, but instead support each other.  It's okay to make someone laugh on purpose, to cry, to express ourselves...because one way to be a good speaker is to be yourself.

Our Goal

To take one great idea, shape it and then present it.  We may learn that we are problem solvers, critical thinkers, or innovators.  We may find that we can make the world a better place.

Our Theme

When the World gives you Lemons make Lemonade.

We will encourage optimism and a positive can-do attitude in the face of adversity or misfortune.

Exploration #2

What makes a great idea....GREAT!

What are the qualities of good ideas?  What is an idea "worth spreading"?

We tried to answer the questions below, with our own thoughts.

Click on the video camera to see our thoughts!

What is an idea?

Can you think of an example of something that came from a person’s idea?

Do you know of any people that have made their ideas famous?

Have you ever found yourself with an idea?

How did it make you feel? Happy? Excited?

What did you do with your idea?

Do you think that it is possible to all of a sudden have an idea?

Where do you think that ideas come from?

Were you ever afraid to tell someone about an idea that you had? Why?

Do you think that other people are right to tell you if your idea is wrong?

Are there some ideas that seem too big or too difficult?

What makes an idea important?

Is there such a thing as a bad idea? And can bad ideas become great ones?

What is magical about ideas?

What does it mean to feed an idea and make it grow?

How can having an idea make you feel more alive?

If an idea spreads is it no longer yours? Does it matter?

If you have an idea how do you make it real?

What does it mean when an idea takes on a life of its own?

Can you think of ways in which ideas have helped change the world?

Exploration #4

Identify, frame and outline your idea!

  • Who is your audience?

  • Keep it simple. What is the message you are trying to share?

  • Emphasize connection over content.  Build your speech from an emotional place.

  • Be authentic.

  • Use humor, a powerpoint, visuals.

  • What are your key points? Stick to them.

  • Practice, practice, practice

Exploration #5

Frame your speech: beginning, middle and end

Great TED Talks tend to capture an audience’s attention immediately. They quickly build on that initial momentum, and provide creative insights and thoughts that reward an audience’s attention. Then, before the talk starts to feel too long, they wrap up with a meaningful conclusion.

We will discuss:

1.What is a throughline?

2. What makes for a strong introduction to a talk?

3. How do you keep the audience’s attention in the middle?

4. What makes for a strong conclusion to a talk?

Start framing your speech!  What is it that you want the audience to walk away with?

Exploration #6 and #7 - Visualize your idea

We will create effective, memorable visuals that will make your TED-Ed talk

come alive for your listeners!
